Building an Autism Acceptance Community

A Discord-based peer support and expert mentorship platform for autistic individuals and their families

in partnership with WeBearish and the Not Okay Bears community
"It's okay to be Not Okay."

The Problem

Autism families are isolated. Diagnosis rates are climbing. But safe, accessible support remains out of reach for most.

Current Gaps

  • Parents & caregivers feel isolated — no safe space to discuss challenges
  • Autistic adults lack peer community and mentorship
  • Expert access is expensive, gatekept, not peer-accessible
  • Online communities often toxic, unmoderated, or clinical
  • Late-diagnosed & self-diagnosed individuals doubly marginalized

Our Approach

A Discord community designed around peer support, expert mentorship, and mutual acceptance.

Three Pillars

  • Peer Support: Parents, autistic adults, and families connect with others who truly understand
  • Expert Access: Monthly AMAs with therapists, psychologists, advocates — no paywalls
  • Safe Space: Carefully moderated. Clear community guidelines. Zero tolerance for ableism.

Why Discord?

  • Low friction entry — most people already have accounts
  • Threads = deep conversations without getting lost
  • Roles & channels = organized support spaces
  • Async-first — works for different schedules & timezones
  • Zero cost to run at scale — community-funded

Community Structure

Thoughtfully organized channels for different needs and perspectives

Why Now?

  • Post-COVID: Families seeking online communities they didn't before
  • Late diagnosis wave: More adults recognizing themselves as autistic
  • Destigmatization: Popular media showing autism more authentically
  • Expert shortage: Not enough therapists/diagnosticians for rising demand
  • Web3 community model: NOKB holders already understand community-first projects

Expert Recruitment

Building a network of credentialed therapists, psychologists, and advocates

Who We're Recruiting

  • Therapists & Psychologists: Licensed professionals who specialize in autism assessment/support
  • ABA Practitioners: Board-certified behavior analysts willing to discuss ABA ethics and alternatives
  • Autism Advocates: Autistic self-advocates with lived experience and public profiles
  • Academic Researchers: Neuroscience and psychology professors studying autism outcomes

Engagement Model

  • Monthly AMAs: 1 hour expert Q&A. Moderated threads. High-quality conversations.
  • Credential Verification: LinkedIn/professional license checks before they join moderation team
  • Compensation: Initially pro-bono (community impact). Future: honorariums ($100-300 per AMA)
  • Partnerships: Work with autism organizations (Autistic Self Advocacy Network, Autism Speaks alternatives)

Liability & Safety

How we keep the community legal, safe, and supportive — not a substitute for professional help

Clear Disclaimers

  • Server intro: "This is peer support, not medical advice. See a licensed provider for diagnosis/treatment."
  • Every expert post: "Expert opinions for discussion only. Not a substitute for professional care."
  • Crisis protocol: Pinned hotline links (988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, Crisis Text Line)

Moderation & Content Guidelines

  • Moderation team: Trained volunteers + staff. Monthly training on autism + mental health + online safety
  • Ableism = instant warnings/bans. No exceptions. This is non-negotiable.
  • Medical advice prohibited: Members can share their experience; experts can share knowledge (not advice)
  • Transparent enforcement: Clear community guidelines. Appeals process. Annual review of rules.

Crisis Protocols

  • Members expressing suicidal ideation: Mods offer hotline numbers + ask permission to escalate
  • Abuse/self-harm content: Immediate removal + referral to crisis resources
  • Grooming/predatory behavior: Zero tolerance. Reported to Discord Trust & Safety + relevant authorities

WeBearish & Not Okay Bears

Founded on real mission. Backed by a real community.

The WeBearish Mission

WeBearish (webearish.com) was founded by @thevoiceofcash, co-founder of Not Okay Bears. Cash is autistic. His family is autistic. He built WeBearish to center autism acceptance and family support — not deficits, not "fixing," but genuine acceptance.

This community is an extension of that mission: "It's okay to be Not Okay."

NOKB Community Advantage

  • 3,000+ NOKB holders already understand Web3 community-first projects
  • Built-in launch community for Day 1 membership
  • Real credibility: Not a grift. Founded by someone with skin in the game.
  • Potential: NFT-gated expert AMAs, DAO governance for community decisions
